Once upon a time in China
23 juillet 2005

It took me a certain time to be comfortable in

It took me a certain time to be comfortable in this city, which however appears very well organized. Fortunately riding a bicycle was a good idea. I haven't been everywhere, Beijing is huge, but I discovered some interesting places that I have never found otherwise.

First of all I have seen a lot of Hutong (traditional Beijing houses). Most of them will disappear before the olympic games. Big buildings grow everywhere every day. Like in Shanghai. Shopping malls also.

The red flags float everywhere in the sky of Beijing, the brown shirts take care of the traffic. Beijing is red. Police State which demonstrates with a lot of energy its authority. Good women and good men, with their red flag, try to control the traffic sometimes in a very abusive way. There are a lot, each traffic light has one.  But everyone gets nervous and becomes aggressiv for nothing. Sometimes it's scary.

On monday I will be in Xian. To see the terra cotta army. It is the beginning of the silk road. I will continue then on Langzhou in Gansu. To locate you the place, it is west of Beijing below Inner Mongolia. Mongolia is between Siberia and China. Inner Mongolia belongs to China. The goal is to reach the more west city : Kashkar. The border with the Central Asia. Still a small night in the train : 14 hours

Once upon a time in China
